Elizabeth Harris-Matschukat has studied with iconographers trained in Russian, Greek and Byzantine traditions. Her devotional icons of Christian saints are made according to traditional recipes and methods. Birch, Ash, or Bass wood boards are braced with hardwood, gessoed, gilded, painted with egg yolk and mineral pigments, and sealed. Her color palette is limited to traditional pigments. Additionally, gilded areas often include pastiglia, sgraffito, and punchwork techniques to enliven the icon in candlelight.
